This page illustrated the Debian voting system using the Debian General Resolution 2004-004 as an example. A detailed explanation and links to further resources can be found in my article about the Debian voting system.
While this page tries to describe the outcome of the general resolution it is by no means official. The official outcome is of course determined by the Debian project secretary, who might have his own opinion about these matters.
From the official web page for the GR2004-004 vote we can get the tally sheet with all the individual votes. There are seven options to choose from, which are explained in detail on the GR2004-004 vote page:
A: Postpone changes until September 2004 [needs 3:1] B: Postpone changes until Sarge releases [needs 3:1] C: Add apology to Social Contract [needs 3:1] D: Revert to old wording of SC [needs 3:1] E: "Transition Guide" foundation document [needs 3:1] F: Reaffirm the current SC [needs 1:1] X: Further discussion
Feeding the tally file into my debian-vote script gives the following output:
A B C D E F X A - 45 187 200 213 289 293 B 301 - 271 257 273 322 339 C 149 77 - 180 186 267 270 D 160 122 174 - 181 239 255 E 131 86 143 179 - 250 258 F 65 55 74 116 83 - 155 X 78 45 93 110 106 188 - quorum requirement: R=45.224440295044 all options passed quorum using 3:1 supermajority for options A, B, C, D and E using 1:1 supermajority for options F and X option C eliminated (fails the supermajority requirement 3:1) option D eliminated (fails the supermajority requirement 3:1) option E eliminated (fails the supermajority requirement 3:1) option F eliminated (fails the supermajority requirement 1:1) option A eliminated (B beats A but A does not beat B) option X eliminated (A beats X but X does not beat A) the Schwartz set is { B } result: option B wins
The vote graph before dropping options because of the supermajority requirement is displayed in figure 1.
Figure 1. The vote graph for GR2004-004 before applying the supermajority rules. An arrow from X to Y indicates that option X defeats option Y, the numbers next to the arrow give the number of corresponding votes. For example there were 301 votes cast preferring B over A while only 45 votes preferred A over B. Thus B defeats A.
